THE NEW SUSTAINABLE ALIGNMENT OF FILIPPA K

February 28, 2015

“Sustainable, ethical and cruelty free fashion is the future. There is no other way about it and as a global citizens, we need to be aware of this truth and support the brands who are making a conscious effort to change, and effectively opposing the industry norms.”

Swedish brand Filippa K was founded by Filippa Knutsson with one simple principle: “I set out to build a brand with substance and truth, not dependent on the superficial trends of the fashion industry.” With this mission deeply rooted in the brand’s philosophy, Filippa K is now taking that next step towards a more sustainable way of creating global fashion; a courageous and important step in this world of over-consumption.

STELLA MCCARTNEY NOEMI TOTE “EMPOWERMENT NOT CHARITY”

November 25, 2014

As I come from a fashion design background, I have seen first-hand how clothing is produced, and the supply chain from conception to completion. There is an incredible lack of “love” put into the garments we wear that are mass produced, and this is in reference to local factories, I can only dare to imagine the truth about the millions of sweatshops overseas.  More and more designers are choosing to produce their fashion in an ethical way. This means their selection of materials, production standards, and actually having the well-being of the customer in mind (wow what an amazing thought!).  But what about the men and women who are producing the products? The ones sitting behind the sewing machines day-in and day-out (sometimes children)… Do we ever really think about them?  Continue Reading…

THE STORY OF FASHION CONSCIOUS COSSAC

November 15, 2014

As the world evolves and people become more and more conscious of the impact every single little choice leaves on our personal wellbeing as well as our planet, we are also blessed to find many new eco brands being born every day.  For us who are constantly on the look-out for new conscious brands to support – this one is definitely one to keep an eye on. I recently discovered Cossac, a new sustainable and eco fashion brand based out of the UK.  Founded and designed by Agatha Natalia Kozak, Cossac is a line that is created out out of the pure desire to offer clothing that is made sustainably, cruelty-free and organic. Fabrics are sourced carefully to have the lowest environmental impact possible, and be the most natural (toxin-free) for the wearer. Every vegan woman knows what I’m talking about when I say : ITS HARD TO FIND VEGAN SHOES. And then add a massive amount of difficulty to find a perfect pair of warm winter boots for the cold Canadian months! It has been quite the hunt for cruelty-free luxury footwear for fall / winter 2014-15.  Below is The Holistic Edit for my favourite Luxury Fall / Winter Vegan Boots.

LA VIE EN NOIR ET BLANC

October 24, 2014

I love solid black and white. It is clean, and my eyes are never compromised by the distraction of colour or print. I could wear black or white everyday…if fact I almost always do – except for the off jeans or grey piece here and there. I was going through some inspiration images and felt  they should be posted to create some eye wash. Why not.

AN EYE ON SYDNEY BROWN

October 22, 2014

I recently discovered the Sydney Brown brand, and was immediately impressed by the overall Japanese aesthetic design and their way of pushing the envelope ever so slightly with proportions, design and materials.  I just love the use of metallics and wood.  Then, something amazing happened, the clouds opened up in the sky, birds started chirping, flowers bloomed, and then I read…that they … are … vegan.

A NEW FOUND LOVE FOR OSKLEN

September 22, 2014

Fashion is such a powerful industry. I believe, it is one of the most powerful in the world…along with food, technology and real estate; fashion is literally a “need”.  It has taken me many years to come to the realization however, that the business of fashion runs so much deeper than the flashy campaigns, advertising, editorials and of course, the runway shows. I found myself being addicted to the egoic relationship with clothes and style, instead of deeply understanding what is it that I am wearing – I was in fact (gasp), a consumer. Now, I know that behind every brand lies a story, a style, a vision, and also most importantly, a code of ethics.  To me, the latter is what matters most and it is what now guides my creative selections over and above the simple beauty of a garment.

A DAY IN ATELIER

September 22, 2014

A few weeks ago, before H.E. even existed, I took a stroll along the Distillery District in Toronto with my very favourite creator, Kevin Allwood – editor in chief and founder of KA Magazine and of course, my most loved hunk of a man. He is also the most creative fashion designer I know for his long time brand NEVIK – which he began in 1986.  I actually began working for NEVIK 10 years ago as an assistant designer and this is where the story all began…for another time I suppose.

The Rombaut brand is sleek, minimalist and stark – no detail left to chance. All materials and fabrics used by Rombaut are sustainably engineered.
